St Lucia: Views of the Pitons from the North
St. Lucia is famous for its volcanic landscapes with two almost perfectly shaped peaks known as the Pitons. The two volcanic plugs, the Grand Piton and the Petite Piton, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are almost identical in height – Gros Piton, the larger of the two, rises to a height of 2,530 ft (771 m), while Petit Piton reaches 2,438 ft (743 m). Anywhere you look on St. Lucia toward the Pitons – the views are spectacular, be it across the valley, from the beach, or the town of Soufriere at their foot. the Pitons are deeply ingrained in Saint Lucian culture and history, serving as a symbol of national identity – they are featured prominently on the country’s flag.
