Sudan: El Kurru Petrified Forest
There is a famous Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona in the USA, but who could have thought there is a vast area of million year old petrified wood – large trees, huge stumps – scattered across the red desert sands near the small village of El Kurru southwest of Karima. It’s estimated that these remains of the once mighty tropical forest are over 200 million years old.
