Sudan: Ghazali Monastery

The area around Karima is chock full of ancient historical sites. East of the city is the ruined Monastery of Ghazali, dating back to the 7th century AD, and the Nubian Christian kingdom of Makuria. While the ruins are now in various state of collapse, you can still see a well-preserved fortified monastery, with walls surrounding it in the middle of the red sands of a desert. There are multiple preserved archways, engraved crosses, churches foundation, and tombstones. This monastery was probably built between 680-720 AD by king Merkurios. The monastery existed until the 12th century.
