Sudan: Meroe Pyramids – Northern Cemetery at Sunrise

Northern Cemetery at sunrise is the ultimate site in the entire Sudan – there are 41 royal pyramids here, and 3 non-royal ones. All tombs date to a fifty year period between 350-300 BC. There are some of the best-preserved pyramids in Meroe, some as high as 30m. All pyramids are smaller then there Egyptian counterparts, slimmer and more slender, with smooth cones and front sunrise-facing chapels. The sunrise is absolutely magical here, all the pyramids brightly illuminated. We explored the entire northern section, including the far-flung outlying pyramids, semi swept by moving desert sands. Surreal!
