Sudan: Mussawarat Temple & Great Enclosure

Another important ancient temple from the 3rd century BC kingdom of Meroe is the Musawwarat Temple and the nearby ruins of the city known as the Great Enclosure. The standalone large building is the Lion Temple of Apedemak dating to mid 4th century BC. The fully restored temple is ornate with ancient art inside and out, in spectacular details. There are many relief of elephants on the walls, suggesting elephants were common here, plus large size relief of various gods. A bit outside is the Great Enclosure, a spread out ruined mega city, a maze of walls, columns, enclosures, and monuments. The city ruins are spread over a large territory and even more is underground un-excavated.
