This is the northernmost church in the world, sitting on the opposite side of the valley across the town of Longyearbyen. It was founded in 1921, but abandoned during WWII when inhabitants of the archipelago fled and later Nazi Germany bombed Svalbard, completely destroying the church. It was rebuilt in 1956. Some elements of the altar of the old church were saved and brought back from Norway to Svalbard. The church actually had two halls – one for praying and one for just chilling out with a free coffee and a book.
