Svalbard: Sorgfjorden – Walruses

Svalbard is an excellent place to encounter walruses. These massive mammals live around the north pole and the subspecies in Svalbard is the Atlantic walrus. They are easily distinguished from seals by super-massive tusks and their overall size and weight of 2,000 kg (4,400 lb). During the 19th century and the early 20th century, walruses were excessively hunted for meat and fat, and the Atlantic population is severely endangered now.
