Sweden: Gamla Uppsala

Gamla Uppsala is a tiny village with a church nowadays, but it’s one of the historically most revered places in Sweden – this was the abode of Swedish kings as far back as 3-4th centuries, it is considered one of the oldest and most important places in the entire Scandinavia, a place of Viking legends and lore. It was also famous for being the place where the “general assembly of all Swedes” would happened from from the prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. Two main sites to visit here – the 11th century Gamla Uppsala Church, which was the seat of Archbishop of Sweden for centuries, and the Royal Mounds, dating back to the 5th century.
