Syria: Damascus – Al-Buzuriyah Souq
This is the most famous souq (aka bazaar) in Damascus. First we came here on a Friday when it was deserted and empty with all stores shut down – but a great chance to observe the architecture and layout. The next day it was packed with shoppers and sellers to the rim – thick crowds of young and old, men and women, and shops packed with absolutely everything imaginable from food and spices to shoes and clothing, to hookah equipment, to racy women’s underwear, and so on and so forth. There was an incredible ice cream shop of probably the best ice cream I ever had – like old-school Soviet plombir, fresh and natural, loaded with pistachio – large crowd and lines to get in to have this “must-try” place in the souq.
