Syria: Damascus – Eating Booza Ice-cream
In the heart of the famous ancient Al-Hamidiyah Souq in the old Damascus there is an ice-cream shop called Bakdash that is world famous for the Syrian ice-cream made here. The shop operates continuously since 1895 and is famous all over the Arab world. The ice-cream they make is called booza and it is even more famous, it existed back in 15th century and is often referred to as the first ice-cream in the world. It’s made out of two types of milk, heavy cream, orchid flower, mastic sap, and sugar, and it is pounded in massive drums (instead of churning). The result is a stretchy texture, which is very creamy and delicious. And a lot of pistachios on top. I think just trying this is a worthy enough reason to come to Syria.
