Syria: Driving Through Damascus Suburbs
Driving north through Damascus suburbs you can see the shocking destruction left by the civil war (nobody calls it “civil war” in Syria, with many of the Islamist groups having had a lot of foreign fighters and foreign sponsorship). Entire districts of eastern and northern Damascus lay in complete destruction, while restoration is painfully slow and the economic crisis is in many way more straining than the war. In 2012 the rebel Free Syrian Army launched a multi-prong attack on Damascus, but were defeated and pushed back, and the tide of the civil war possible turned right here.
