Tajikistan: Ancient Sarasm
Sarasm is one of only two UNESCO World Heritage sites in Tajikistan. It dates back to the 4th century BC! Archeological and historically speaking, the site is massively important as it is the earliest known agricultural society to exist in Central Asia. It represents one of the ancient chain of settlements spanning a vast territory from Turkmenistan to the north to Iran to the south. It was only discovered quite recently in 1977 and accidentally – during an agricultural process activity in the local farm fields. The UNESCO designation provided the money to build protective covers over the excavation sites and also for the awesome museum describing Sarasm and exhibiting the biggest archaeological find – the burial of a princess with slaves/servants.
