Tanzania: Driving from Iringa to Mikumi

Going by land from the central Tanzanian town of Iringa to the Mikumi national park takes you through a super scenic landscape of mountains and baobabs. Most of the route skirts the Udzungwa Mountains National Park – stunning mountain landscapes and beautiful sunset. All this is fantastic and wonderful until you hear some parts of the road that go through very steep up and a down grades. As this is the main east-west road in Tanzania, it’s packed with heavy truck and hauler traffic, that naturally has problems with steep grades. Accident are common here, especially on narrow mountain stretches, where runaway trucks collide and block traffic for hours – what could have been a trip ending a bit after sunset turned into a 11pm arrival…
