Thailand: Ayutthaya – Wat Mahathat Temple

Ayutthaya was the second kingdom on the territory of today’s Thailand and last for over 4 centuries achieving greatness and prosperity. Ayutthaya city was the capital of the kingdom with many magnificent temples and palaces. Many of the building were destroyed by the Burmese when Ayutthaya kingdom fell to them in the 18th century. Today, a lot is being restored and it’s a a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most famous temple in Ayutthaya is Wat Mahathat, it has the most photographed Buddha head in a tree. There are many prangs (Khmer-style pagodas) around this temple grounds, many leaning like the Pisa tower.
