Thailand: Ayutthaya – Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol

This temple lies outside the historical center of the ancient Ayutthaya city. Meaning “Great Monastery of Auspicious Victory”, it’s actually an active temple, not just ruins. This was the temple where the religious leaders resided in ancient times and today it’s considered one of the most important religious monuments in the country. The central chedi (stupa) is the tallest in Ayutthaya and offers good views of the surrounding site. Inside the central stupa there is a wishing well. There are over 1000 Buddha statues all around, big and small, standing and sitting in stupas and lining along the walls.
