Togo: Kara – Flying Foxes on Kara River

Kara town is situated along the Kara river and in the morning we were threaded to a spectacular sight of thousands of massive bats flying and roosting on trees near the river. These are straw-colored fruit bats, a species of the largest bats in size, flying foxes. They take their name from the yellowish fur on their body (really like red foxes), and have wingspan to 76cm/2.5 feet! They are very social and live in massive groups of over 100,000 individuals (or 11 mln like in Zambia). Unlike many other bat species, these guys are not purely nocturnal and they are usually quite active around the colony in the mornings.
