Togo: Koutammakou – Visiting Koutammakou Village
As part of driving through then Koutammakou, the Land of the Batammariba, you actually get a guide that accompanies you along the route and takes you to one of the traditional mud house villages. You get to see the houses up close, see how the people leave, even walk into the mud house structures and climb to the second floor. Some of the buildings have flat roofs, others have conical thatched roofs. Cattle and goats live just nearby, granaries are part of the structures, and local chief greets you in the village. The traditional mud houses are called Takienta, and are actually considered the national symbol of Togo. Besides the buildings, there are also ceremonial spaces, rocks and idol stones for various animist ceremonies.
