Tristan da Cunha: Yellow-nosed Albatrosses
And the most beautiful looking albatross award goes to the Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross, nesting on Tristan da Cunha in large numbers. We saw them fly all around, land on the water, fish on large schools of fish – it was totally incredible. They are medium-sized albatrosses, with wingspan of up to 2m. While they can be spotted all around the southern Atlantic Ocean, they breed only here on Tristan da Cunha and Falklands (the latter in very small numbers). They look very graceful on flight with their black wings and white bodies. Their head is the most distinctive – with they black bills with a sharp yellow line and eyes with black patches around them – they look like they are wearing carefully applied and elegant makeup.
