Turkey: Tombs of Ahlat
The west coast of the Lake Van has a spectacular cemetery with 12-14th century Sejjuk and Ottoman tombstones. The stones stand almost twice the human height and are intricately carved with inscriptions and calligraphy. The tombstones are spread over a wide field and many are in stunningly perfect condition, despite having been exposed to the elements for many centuries. Bigger tombstones belong to nobility and judges. The site is impressive, especially if you get to stroll around at sunset.
