Turkmenistan: Derwaza Gas Crater at Sunset
Derwaza Gas Crater is know as “The Door To Hell”. It is located in the middle of nowhere in the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, hundreds of miles from the nearest village. It is a large crater that has been burning since 1971, when a geological drill for gas went wrong and the rig collapsed into an underground cavern. The gas caught fire and has been burning ever since as the gas field underground is apparently near limitless. Derwaza is an incredible place, probably among the top 10 I have seen in my life. Awe-inspiring times 10!
