USA/CA: Lassen Volcanic NP – Bumpass Hell

The most spectacular geothermal area in the Lassen Volcanic NP is the Bumpass Hell Trail – a massive field of fumaroles, mud pots, steam vents, and sulphuric springs. There are no geysers here like in Yellowstone, but the smell and amount of gas is much higher, and you feel it from quite far away. This is also a much higher elevation then Yellowstone – and everything is steaming and boiling and fuming. A boardwalk leads to the volcanic areas for an upclose and personal look, but the best panoramic view can be head from a little further up the trail where the entire Bumpass Hell area unfolds in front of you.
