USA/MN: Pipestone National Monument

Pipestone National Monument protects the historic quarries of catlinite rock also known as “Pipestone”. Plains Indian tribes used it to make the ceremonial pipes and the quarries quarries are sacred to many of the tribes of North America, like Dakota, Sioux,and Lakota Indians. The burial sites and mounds found around the site as well as the Indian trails leading to the site indicate that this quarries existed possibly going back to Pre-European discovery of America. Trails go around the quarries and the rock escarpment where the Pipestone was sourced
