USA/OK: Tallgrass Prairie Preserve – Giant Puffball Mushrooms

Giant puffball mushrooms (Calvatia gigantea) can grow to 10 -70 centimeters (4-28 in) in diameter and weigh up to 20 kg / 44 lb. So these ones I found in profusion in the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve were still relatively young and small. What made it interesting was that they formed a perfect ring, a rather uncommon phenomenon when mushrooms spread out concentrically underground and produce fruiting bodies almost in perfect rings. They are edible and quite delicious although not very flavorful.
