USA/OK: Tallgrass Prairie Preserve – Milkweed

Milkweed is a type of plant found in the American prairies and easily identifiable for its plastic-like looking complex flowers and profuse amount of milky substance coming out if cut. It’s a very common plant in the grasslands of Oklahoma. Interestingly , the plant is an integral part of the monarch butterfly migration – every year, millions of butterflies fly from Mexico to central USA and then further up in Canada precisely to feed on milkweed. At Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, you can find several species of the plant, including red Butterfly Milkweed, and green Spider Antelopehorn.
