USA/OR: Yaquina Head
Yaquina Head was an absolutely fabulous headland with insane marine scenery and a lot of wildlife. Sticking out from the Oregon Coast, the rugged high cliffs lead to a spectacular white Yaquina Head Lighthouse, standing almost on cliff’s edge. Various rocks and seastacks offshore are packed almost to the limit with massive seabird colonies (on high rocks) and layers upon layers of seals (on lower rocks). Despite severe wind gusts and freezing sea air, we spend more then hour watching the wildlife. And then something incredible happened – we spotted two grey whales just offshore, literally within feet of the cliffs – playing, turning, showing flippers and tails. It was totally insane – whale watching offahore!
