USA/SD: Geographic Center of the USA
The small town of Belle Fourche has a monument to the geographic center of the USA. Which is actually incorrect – the true geographic center lies about 20mi/32km north in a complete middle of nowhere in grasslands accessible by a small fort road. National Geographic Society coordinates identify the spot as an “uninhabited parcel of private pastureland approximately 12 mi (19 km) east of the cornerpoint where the South Dakota/Wyoming/Montana borders meet.”. According to the NGS data sheet, the actual marker is “set in an irregular mass of concrete 36 inches below the surface of the ground.” So, being true perfectionists we found the actual spot – a geo-market on the rock, an America frag, a cross and a wooden plaque – looks more like a homeless abode then the geographic center of the United States.
