USA/UT: Grosvernor Arch
Not many people get to see this – the spectacular Grosvenor double sandstone arch. The massive arch is located deep inside a remote and rarely visited Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in southern Utah, just getting to the arch takes about an hour driving on washboardy sandy dirt roads across the utterly desolate and inhospitable terrain. But it’s well worth the effort – the arch is unlike any other in the Arches or Canyonlands National Parks! The arch is part of a sandstone monolith, rising like an alien ship from the desert floor. The arch is 150ft high and the larger span is 100ft in diameter, and you can climb up a little bit and stand underneath it on a very precipitous ledge (it’s easier to climb up then to descend down – at one point I was wondering how the heck I was gonna get down). An absolutely spectacular and rare geological formation in the middle of nowhere in Utah!
