Venezuela: Mt Roraima – Hiking Across Gran Sabana
Mount Roraima has been on my list of mysterious places to see since I read Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Lost World” when I was a kid. The book describes an expedition to an isolated plateau in Venezuela where prehistoric animals and plans survived. The book was based on Mt Roraima – a 9000ft tepui aka flattop mountain with sheer dropoffs on all sides. And now the dream became a reality! The first day of expedition to climb Roraima is hiking 16km across the vast expanses of Gran Sabana – savanna-like grasslands surrounding the tableland plateaus. Panoramic views abound in all directions!
