Vietnam: My Son Sanctuary

My Son is an expansive archeological site of various semi-ruined Hindu temples built by the Cham people between 4-12th centuries AD. It is considered the largest Hindu site in the entire Southeast Asia and the place of one of the most developed kingdoms in the ancient times in this part of the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the ruins scattered over about a 2km winding trail (brutal in +41C heat). Some temples are quite intact with sculptures and carvings still standing, although crumbling and partially overgrown by the jungle. Sadly, My Son was substantially destroyed and damaged during the Vietnam War when Americans carpet-bombed it.
