Yaroslavl Oblast: Rostov Velikiy – Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery
Besides the famous Kremlin, Rostov Velikiy is also home to a massive 14th century fortified monastery complex – the Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery. It’s beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Nero. The cathedral inside has a shrine to Dimitry of Rostov, an important figure in the Russian orthodoxy, and as such, the monastery draws crowds of worshippers and pilgrims every day.
