Zambia: White Rhinos at Mosi-oa-Tunya NP
The National park along the Victoria Falls in the Zambian side also has a sizable forest part with a small population of southern white rhinos that are protected and monitored 24/7. On a walking safari here you can approach the rhino uncomfortably but exhilaratingly close. I got to observe a mother and baby rhino peacefully grazing and then waddling in mud. The mother seems totally calm and disinterested while the baby was prancing around, looking at me inquisitively with his little baby horn. The “white” rhino is actually a misnomer and is likely a derivative of the Afrikaans word for “wide” to describe its characteristic wide lip.
