The UNESCO World heritage site of “Heart of Neolithic Orkney” consists of four distinct properties in the central part of the main island. The first I saw was the Standing Stones of Stenness- the oldest Neolithic henge site in the entire United Kingdom archipelago. The thin stone slabs once probably formed a circle, similar to the Stonehenge in England. Radiocarbon dating puts the construction on this site to sometime around 3100BC. The site has an atmospheric feel with green pastures in all directions.
