Argentina: Andean Burrowing Parrot

Andean Burrowing Parrot is unmistakable with with a white ring around the eye, green feathers, loud super loud screaming, and chaotic flights and behavior. They are named for their nesting habits – digging deep burrows in often vertical clay or sandstone cliffs, descending on their home base in large social groups. The burrows are up to 3 meters in depth, many days of work with beaks and claws go into digging out these luxury homes. Noisy doesn’t even begin to describe how loud they are! Feeding is also in large social groups – from various berries to vegetables to plant matter. The population is in a rapid decline due to primarily to habitat loss and pet trade, although they are still quite numerous all along the Andes.
