Baffin Island: Floe Edge – Return to Pond Inlet
Warm weather and rains turned the Eclipse sound into a sky-blue expanse of ice. The snow on top of ice melted into a layer of water and the ice beneath turned vibrant blue. The overcast sky actually highlighted and brought the blues out even further. A three hour snowmobile and qamutiik (wooden sled) ride across the Eclipse Sound and back to Pond Inlet was bumpy but totally awesome, navigating the many new cracks that appeared in the ice with many ring seal hauling out and hanging out at or near the cracks. Surreal futuristic otherworldly Pandora-icecap-like landscapes abound!
