Boliva: Copacabana – Around Town

Copacabana is a rather small border town, just 10 minutes away from the Peruvian land border. But the location is amazing and the town is beautiful – sitting in a bowl between two hills with a curve of a beach on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The streets are all steep in town and it takes some strenuous effort to walk up and down at the 12,500ft of elevation that Copacabana is at. Being a tourist layover hub on way to/from Bolivia/Peru, the waterfront is full of bars and cafes with great terrace views and al serving trucha – lake trout from the Titicaca. Tourist spots aside, the town is laid back and sleepy, seemingly in a time warp of 30-50 years back with old clunky Ford trucks roaming the streets, colorful Bolivian women carrying sacks with babies on their backs, and everyone chewing coca leaves to combat elevation. Oh, and there are some very funny T-shirts for sale!
