Bougainville: Sing Sing Cultural Performance
Bougainville is most certainly off any tourism chart and any tourist here is an absolute rarity. So I was pleasantly surprised when a local village organized a sing sing performance – complete with dancing and music – just for me alone! Women and girls danced in traditional costumes and face painting, while men blew and drummed on bamboo pipes. Culturally, Bougainville is very different from Papua New Gaines and more similar to Solomon Islands. Notice how some girls have “Box 2” painted on their backs – this is in reference to the second question of the referendum – “complete independence for Bougainville”.
