Campbell Island: Encounter With NZ Sea Lion

Descending down from the Campbell Island highlands, the narrow boardwalk path was blocked by a massive New Zealand sea lion. A 300kg male is not someone you play a game of chicken with – everyone had to step of the boardwalk and let the animal pass. The sea lion dragged himself along and then stopped right in front of my face, sized me up, and then continued along, grunting and shlopping along, on his way to scare more hikers. An amazing encounter with one of the rarest animals on the planet – there are only about 2000 of these species left.
