Campbell Island: Other Flora

Besides the megaherbs (see post 45), the Campbell Island has a lot of other interesting flora, including orchids. The island is perpetually wet and the peaty soils are great for lichen, ferns, mosses, cushion plants, orchids, gentians, and similar small species. A lot of territory is covered by tussocks grass, and only thanks to elevated boardwalks can you walk around – it’s so wet and mushy. Famous English botanist Joseph Hooker said that Campbell Island has “flora display second to none outside the tropics”, with 128 species of vascular plants recorded here.
