Canada/Quebec: Montreal – Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours is the oldest church in Montreal, built in 1771 on the ruin of an earlier chapel from 1655, built by the first settlers in the area. When Montreal fell to the British, this became the first Anglophone church in the city. In the mid of the 19th century the church became known as Sailors’ Church for all the sailors who came here to Al’s and thank the Virgin for help in their voyages. In 1849 a statue of the Virgin as Star of the Sea was placed on top of the church. It’s a beautiful church inside and out with a lot of historic painting and decor.
