Crima: Bakhchisaray – Uspenskiy Cave Monastery

The Assumption Monastery of the Caves (Uspenskiy Monastery) is absolutely stunning – carved out of a vertical rock wall on the central limestone mountains of Crimea near the town of Bakhchisaray. The monastery here dates back to the 8th century and Byzantine times. The current Orthodox monastery was built in a sheer cliff wall in the 15th century and its rooms and halls are all caves! The monastery was shut down and nearly abandoned during the soviet times and was reopened and restored and revived in 1993. It’s an absolutely stunning site of the monastery clinging to the cliff and all the religious interior rooms carved out of caves. Photography is not encouraged here.
