Ecuador: El Angel Ecological Reserve

El Angel Ecological Reserve is located in the far north of Ecuador, very close to Colombian border, at high elevations of 12-16 thousand feet. This is the only place in the world to see foggy, moist, and cold moorland covered to horizon with bizarre frailejones plants. Frailejones (Espeletia pychnophyla), grow up to 20 ft high and have flowers that are similar to those of sunflowers. Hairy thick leaves serve to protect the plants from the cold and also collect the water from the ever-present fog. It’s an out worldly landscape and incredible experience.
