Eritrea: Eritrean Food Recap
Most dishes in Eritrea are meat or vegetable stews served over fermented injera bread. Zigni is considered to be the national dish of Eritrea, it’s a spicy meat stew. While there are similarities with Ethiopian cuisines, Eritrean is slightly different in ingredients and spices, as well as Italian influences (frittata is omnipresent for breakfast, pizza is considered native, macchiato culture in incredible, and roasted goat is knows as cabreto al forno. Here are some dishes that we tried: zigni, janti with tuna, sisi ggg; sardine frittata, fish soup; zigil tipsi; alicha siga; shiro special; choet with fish and shrimp; tipsi goat; dulot (goat intestines); kifta (raw meat); cabreto al forno; gitgir salad. There is only one brand of beer, also local gin and arak.
