Ethiopia: Simien Mountains NP – Hiking Along Escarpment

The Simien Mountains in the northern Ethiopia is one of the most unique places on earth – a series of high altitude plateaus mostly above 12k feet with spectacular dropoffs and pinnacles and panoramic views of the valleys deep down thousands of feet below. The Simien Mountains national park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The mountains were formed around 40 million years ago, long before the creation of the Rift Valley. They are the remnants of an ancient massive shield volcano. The escarpment is truly dramatic here – and the viewed are stupendous – we went hiking just along on the first evening we got to the park!
