Ethiopia: Southern Nations – Terraced Landscape of Konso
The terraced landscape of the mountains north of the Omo Valley has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural significance and immense beauty. These harsh mountains are cold and dry at above 8 thousand feet and yet the Konso tribe that has lived here for centuries have figured a way to turn the inhospitable landscape into productive agricultural land. Practically every hill and mountain is terraced with layers and layers of stone terraces that prevent erosion, capture water, and allow for crops to flourish. It’s a starkly beautiful drive as the road winds through these terraces and the landscape goes beyond horizon in every direction. On the highest hills, lie fortified Konso villages with their conical hits and friendly and welcoming people.
