France: The walled city of St Malo

St Malo is nothing short of amazing town – completely surrounded by a massive three story high and three meter (10 feet) wide wall. It’s located on on island and dates back to 13th century. You can walk on the wall all around the city and look down on it or look out toward multiple small fortresses and watchtowers on offshore islands. St Malo is infamous as the city of pirates or corsairs. It actually declared complete independent from France in 1520. St Malo has a very deep seafaring tradition – in fact Cartier who discovered Canada and Quebec sailed from here. Similarly, the first European settlers of Falklands also sailed from this place.
