Gabon: Loango NP – Flora of Savanna

The white sands of the Loango savanna are unlike any other habitat in the world. The area gets tremendous amounts of rainfall and the sands are super saturated with water. As such, the soil is very poor in oxygen and the flora has to adapt to this to survive. Interestingly, carnivorous plants proliferate in Loango savanna with many species of Utricularia aka Bladderwort of different colors – yellow, purple, white – Utricularia Andongensis and Utricularia Spiralis – popping up their fragile heads in plain white sand, many endemic to this area. Forest edge also had many unique flowers, including spectacular white orchids. And the water ponds are covered with white lilies and furry-looking yellow Nimphoides Forbesiana.
