Kurils/Iturup: White Cliffs

After about two hours of beach driving along the stunning Mirror Beach you get to an even more insane natural site of White Cliffs. The snow-white cliffs rise almost vertically and are made 100% from pumice – a light and porous volcanic material that is formed during a violent volcanic eruption of superheated glass-like materials that cool down rapidly (this usually happens with volcano erupts under water). The resulting gas gets trapped in the rock creating pumice. So these white cliffs are almost pure pumice – you can lift massive sizes like there’s no gravity. And when I scales the cliffs to the top – not an easy fit on the fragile terrain – the panorama of the entire cliff valley was absolutely otherworldly!
