Laos: Luang Prabang – Wat Wisunnarat

Another spectacular old temple complex in Luang Prabang is Wat Wisunnarat. It is one of the oldest and most historic temples in the city, originally built in 1513 by King Wisunarat aka Visoun. The temple is known for its unique architectural style – a towering stupa called “That Makmo,” which means t“Watermelon Stupa” due to its shape resembling a watermelon. It’s an impressive structure that stands about 34 m (111 ft) tall, adorned with intricate stucco decorations. The walls of some of the temple building are covered with historic paintings, some quite brutal in the descriptions. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
