Maldives: Indian Flying Foxes
Maldives are not only about lux resorts and underwater fun, there’s some unique wildlife watching to be had on the islands as well. Like the Indian Flying Fox, aka Pteropus medius, a species of giant bats common to the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, and the northern Maldives. This is one of the largest bats in the world, up to 1.6 kg (3.5 lb) in weight, and wingspan of 1.2–1.5 m (3 ft 11 in–4 ft 11 in). They don’t roost on the island we were on but often come here to hangout (literally) in the evening and morning around the fruit trees. Furry and quite agile, these mammals are quite inquisitive and totally unafraid of humans.
