Mexico/Chiapas: San Cristobal de las Casas – Iglesia de Guadalupe

A bit away from the city center of San Cristobal de las Casas, there is a high hill named Cerro de Guadalupe with the Guadalupe Church on top. The church is visible from all around the city as it stands on its striking hilltop location. It takes 79 steps to get up to the top of the hill and see the church, offering panoramic views of the entire city in front of view. The church was built in 1834 and is an important pilgrimage sight in Mexico and expensively for the local population in Chiapas. The interior is quite ornate with a very high concentration of crucified and otherwise suffering jesuses even for a Mexican church – we counted 12!
